Basic First Aid Awards Primary Curriculum (Part of physical health and mental well-being)

Meet DfE Guidance

Since September 2020, schools are required to follow new statutory guidance for teaching basic first aid.

Four Award Levels

We at Panda Paramedic offer a structured program with four award levels: "Well Done," "Bronze," "Silver," and "Gold." These awards cover all key concepts outlined in the statutory first aid curriculum.

First Aid Curriculum

Schools can implement the program either by having the entire school progress through all four awards every two years or by having half the school participate annually. This flexible approach ensures that all students gain comprehensive first aid skills.

Why teach children basic first aid?

Why teach children basic first aid?

Teaching children basic first aid as part of the primary school curriculum in England (and in many other countries) is important for several reasons:

  • Life-Saving Skills: Basic first aid training equips children with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively in emergencies. They learn how to recognize common injuries and illnesses and how to administer appropriate first aid until professional help arrives. In situations like choking, severe bleeding, or cardiac arrest, prompt action can save lives.

  • Empowerment and Confidence: Learning first aid empowers children to take action in emergency situations, rather than feeling helpless or panicking. It boosts their confidence in their ability to help others and themselves, which can be crucial in high-stress situations.

  • Promotes Safety and Well-being: First aid education raises awareness about safety and injury prevention. Children learn about potential hazards in their environment and how to minimize risks. They also gain an understanding of personal health and well-being, including topics like hygiene, nutrition, and physical activity.

  • Fosters Responsibility and Empathy: Teaching first aid encourages empathy and a sense of responsibility towards others. Children learn to empathize with those who are injured or unwell and understand the importance of offering assistance. This fosters a culture of caring and mutual support within the school and community.

  • Prepares for Real-Life Situations: Accidents and emergencies can happen anywhere, including at school, home, or in public settings. By teaching first aid in schools, children are better prepared to respond to emergencies they may encounter in real life, whether it’s at home, on the playground, or out in the community.

  • Educational and Life Skills: First aid education provides valuable practical skills that children can carry with them into adulthood.

Overall, integrating basic first aid into the primary school curriculum helps create safer and more resilient communities by equipping children with essential life-saving skills and fostering a culture of care and responsibility.

Department for Education
From 2020 it will be compulsory for all school children in England to be taught first aid.

This was announced by Education Secretary, at the time, Gavin Williamson, and he said the new health curriculum would give every child “the chance to learn life-saving skills.”

The decision to make the lessons compulsory came after Lord Kerslake’s inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017 raised concerns that people on the scene “did not appear familiar with first aid principles.”

First aid education will increase the number of children and young people able and willing to help in an emergency. It will also improve their understanding of health issues and how to care for themselves, building a new generation of life-savers.

British Red Cross
British Red Cross research found that nine in ten adults would not be able, confident, or willing to help in life-threatening first aid emergencies.

First aid education for children provides valuable practical skills that children can carry with them into adulthood. Hopefully providing the future generations with adults that ARE able, confident, and willing to help in life-threatening emergencies.

If you find yourself in the 9/10 then it is likely that you may prefer to use external trainers to provide this training for your pupils. This is where we at Panda Paramedic can help! We are trained medical professionals who specialize in teaching children basic first aid. We run fun, interactive, and age-appropriate sessions. We also provide first aid courses and CPD sessions for grown-ups too!
